Great skin can be a product of genetics or a great routine. Catering to my skin and body is more than looking good for others -- it’s for myself and little time for me to indulge in daily luxury. I value having healthy skin that radiates so finding products that will help me achieve this goal is very important to me.
The great thing is that your skincare routine doesn't have to be long or break the bank. There's various products and brands that cater to all skin types and price points. A skincare routine is typically 6 steps.
The typical steps in a skincare routine are:
Cleansing (daily)
Exfoliation (3-4 times a week)
Toning (daily)
Face masks (3-4 times a week /optional)
Serums or treatments (daily)
Moisturising (daily)
SPF (AM routine daily)
Be mindful that the steps above don't all need to be done. For example, I don't use a toner every day because my esthetician told me that I don’t really need to do so. In fact, the toner caused me to break out and my skin couldn’t handle it!
Using too many products thinking that it will all work can harm your skin too (trust me, I was there before). This is why it's important to find products that work for you and listen to licensed professionals on their recommended products list catered to you.
Finding the right products that work for you can seem daunting and tedious. There's over a million products and brands to choose from. Here’s 4 tips to help you find the best skincare products that work for you.
1. Determine your skincare concerns
Do you want to focus on acne, is your skin dehydrated, or do you want to switch products in your routine? There are no wrong answers but know this is a great guide to finding the products that will target certain areas.
2. Visit an esthetician
Visiting a licensed professional will cut out any guesswork, mishaps, save you tons of time and money along this journey. Even though an esthetician won’t be able to offer treatments for severe or medical skin conditions (that what a dermatologist will do) they will be able to improve the appearance of your skin and suggest products that will work for your skin type.
Many estheticians offer virtual consultations. Take pictures of the products you use so they can determine if you need to get rid of them or if they work well for you and your skin type. You can use Yelp or Google to find one in your city. Be sure to do your research and read reviews!

3. Know your skin type
Knowing your skincare type will eliminate products that you don't need. For example, if you have oily skin you will stay away from products that are catered to those with dry skin. A lot of times skincare products can be used for all skin types.
There 5 skin types you can fall under:
Normal Skin
Oily Skin
Dry Skin
Combination Skin
Sensitive Skin
4. Stick to your routine for at least 3 to 6 months
It's very rare to see a product work overnight if it does that's great! But to see the full and best results of your routine or a product it's best to stick with it for 3 to 6 months that way you can identify the change and improvement to your skin.
